Resource Description

This digital resource focuses on the treatment of girls in rural Ethiopia--their lack of opportunity and lack of choice in marriage--through the story of Selome, who wants to become a teacher, but her father insists she quit school and marry a cow herder, so she dresses as a boy and runs away. This multimedia graphic novel combines storytelling with photos and videos of what Ethiopia really looks like, and where Selome would have travelled. It explores issues of discrimination against females, extreme poverty, and lack of access to education and could be used for units in grades 4-8 on human rights, refugees, or immigration, and how countries treat their citizens.
