Resource Description

This Canadian website provides current data and information on a wide array of public health topics in a succinct and readable format for both the general public and health professionals. A special section focused on youth covers timely topics such as cyber safety, sexual health, substance abuse, and vaping. The resource is suitable for student research and inquiry-based learning, but can also be used by students and educators to access supplemental information on their own personal health, including links to health providers, videos, and public health alerts.

It provides up-to-date, reliable, Canadian information on a wide variety of physical, emotional, and mental health-related areas connecting to the Grade 8-10 Physical and Healthy Living Big Ideas. As well, the website contains numerous links connecting Grade 8-10 ADST Foods themes of food safety, health factors, and well-informed food production and preparation. It is a good place for research possibilities and inquiry-based learning. Learners are introduced to the various Canadian public health related agencies and how they work together.

The site has sections for health professionals and the general public, with appropriate language based on the user. There are multiple routes into each topic, depending on who is accessing the site (health professionals or the general public). Information is specific to Canada, and can sometimes be specified by province as well. Research information is easily found for learners. This site is also available in French.

Each page provides an opportunity to report on a problem or mistake (e.g. broken link, incorrect information). Testers did find one broken link. Videos include a transcript. Because information on the site flows between various government agencies, it can be difficult to easily navigate back to the Public Health main page, however, there are multiple embedded links for more detailed research or investigation. Some information is available for download as a PDF. The site is clean and uncluttered, but it lacks appealing visuals.
