Resource Description

This Canadian website contains lesson plans, videos, presentation guides, slideshows, talking notes, and resources to help educators promote respectful inclusion of all students regardless of sexual orientation, foster diversity, provide information on LBGTQ+, and reduce discrimination and prejudice. Comprehensive, curriculum-appropriate lesson plans for K-12 can be used for current units and lessons and are easily adaptable as teachers can select specific content from individual lessons and adapt them for their curricular and community needs. Videos and presentation guides can be used with school staffs and communities to help build understanding.

Teachers need to be aware of their students' maturity and needs as they are previewing lessons, and consider their school communities. Several activities within lessons are differentiable based on student interest and learning needs. In addition, lessons are easily adaptable for teachers as they may select the content they wish to include.

The mobile site is well-sized and clear with a search function that is absent in the desktop interface. Most external links are operational, but a few in the lessons are no longer working. Finding the link between the main website and the province-specific information required attention to detail.

Lessons are clearly laid out, with talking points for teachers. Slideshows that were created to be used with school staffs and parent communities included scripted suggestions for each slide. Tools were provided to deal with off-topic, insensitive, or awkward comments during a presentation. Some assessment ideas are provided with lessons.

In terms of adding custom content, teachers have the option to upload lesson plans to TeachBC.bctf.ca, tag them #sogi, and email the organization, whereupon they will be evaluated independently by TeachBC and may then be included in the lessons provided on the website. Extensive lessons in multiple disciplines are well organized and well supported with curricular links and resources. No apparent search function in the desktop site. The site is more directed towards educators and parents than towards students.

SOGI 123 was created by the ARC Foundation in conjunction with the BC Ministry of Ed, the BC Teachers' Fed, the UBC Faculty of Ed, individual school districts, & community LGBTQ+ organizations. The website provides information and resources to educators and parents with the aim to reduce discrimination and promote respectful inclusion of all students, regardless of sexual orientation. Visitors to the site can find comprehensive, curriculum-appropriate lesson plans for students K-12 which promote diversity and information on LBGTQ+. Videos are provided which identify the need for and benefits of the curriculum. There are also slideshows and talking notes for PAC or staff presentations.

There are a variety of detailed lesson plans provided for all grade levels, which could be used within the context of current units and lesson ideas. Teachers can also pull resources from individual lessons and adapt them to suit their community and curricular needs.
